Acting, Day 3

Today most classes hit around page 30 in acting, tomorrow, we should hit to around page 45.  What was covered today in topics was  a LOT of person vs. person conflict.  3 had a blowout with 5, accusing him of changing his vote, when in reality it was 9.  Then, in a bit of drama, 8 pulled out an identical knife to the murder weapon...where'd he get that?

Also in class, you had your Quote Hunt checked and put your illustrated quote on the wall.  If you were a slacker and didn't complete the homework on time for credit, you should still fill it out, because you will certainly need it for the upcoming essay and quiz - date to be announced shortly.

Quote Hunt

Today we are doing a bit of review for what we read over the last two days.  You job is to find quotes that show characterization (the characters' personalities) and the several different conflicts that we have already gone over.  You shouldn't go further than page 25 in your quest to find quotes.

The reason we're doing this is because, yes, there will be a test that you can use these as open-notes, and there will also be an essay, which these quotes will also come in VERY handy for!

Tomorrow, after checking the over the quotes and putting up the pictures, we'll continue with the acting!

Homework:  If you didn't finish the Quote Hunt already, you better have it done for class tomorrow!

Acting, Day 2

Today we shared what we predicted for the primary conflict.  Most of you said it was going to be person vs. person conflict.  While those will be the most frequent kind of conflict, it is not the PRIMARY conflict.  We see that as soon as the first vote occurs on page 11, when 8 is the only one who votes "not guilty."  That sets up the entire story, and it won't be resolved until the group convinces 8 to go along with a guilty verdict, or he convinces all of them to vote not-guilty...or it's declared a hung jury.

So the answer is....

CENTRAL CONFLICT =
person vs. group, with 8 vs. the rest of the jurors!

Other conflicts we saw today (up to about page 20):
  • 3 vs. 8, when three is the most vocal critic of 8 holding out.
  • 3 vs. SELF, when we hear about his past.
  • 10 vs. 5, when 5 stands up to 10's bigotry and reveals that he is from the slums.
  • F vs. 10, when 10 calls him a K-I-D
HOMEWORK:  none.

Jury Deliberation Is Now in Session

Hello class!  We now begin acting and discussing 12 Angry Men, paying special attention to characterization, character motivation, and conflict!  We will be acting out the play in chunks, interspersed with discussion, analysis, and writing!  Details of culminating projects will be forthcoming, but know this:  you will be writing a literary analysis essay, collecting quotes that show characterization and conflict!
Homework: (due tomorrow)  Write one paragraph predicting what you think the central conflict of the play will be.

Grammar Review and Presentations

Here are some review sentences we did today.  Be sure to know these for a test next week on verbs (transitive and intransitive action verbs, linking verbs, predicate adjective, predicate nominative, helping verbs, verb phrases), adjectives, and adverbs.

Nouns and Pronouns, Verbs, Adjectives, Adverbs

Sammy was so smart because she already knew adjectives and adverbs.

Anna quickly copied the stupid sentences.

Before Scerb could ace the test, he needed to do more totally fun exercises.

The students demurely asked Mr. Stowell about the dreadful day of the very big test.
