Today we are going to have a review mini-lesson on irony in literature, specifically the three kinds of irony:
- Verbal Irony: When a character says something that either means the opposite, or is unaware of its deeper significance. Example situation is when a character says, "I would die for a piece of that lovely pie," and is handed a piece of poison pie.
- Situational Irony: When the reader is led to expect something very different from what happens...a dramatic twist.
- Dramatic Irony: When the reader knows something that a character does not. Examples can be found in any classic horror film....where you scream to the characters: "don't open that basement door, idiot, there's a chainsaw murderer behind it," as you watch them open the door.
